Cloth vs disposable nappies
New parents often face the question of which nappies (diapers to you Americans) to use - cloth or disposables? There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of nappies. This lens will list the pros and cons of each and hopefully make your decision making a little bit easier. When disposable nappies were first invented they certainly proved a boon for busy mothers, but controversy raged as to whether they were better than cloth nappies. It was felt by cloth diehards that disposable nappies contributed much to nappy rash in babies. Studies have since shown that it is more the condition of the nappy than what it is made from that is the key factor in preventing nappy rash. Nowadays disposable nappies are made from special polymers that wick the moisture away from the skin, so preventing nappy rash. Cloth nappies cannot claim to have this feature, yet it is possible to purchase nappy liners that do the same job. This is an added expense of course, along with the pins and pilchers that are needed for cloth nappies. Cloth nappies also take more time to maintain. They must be washed and dried, all of which costs money - and has a negative impact on the environment, especially if you live in a drought-affected area. Disposable nappies cost more to purchase than cloth nappies. They are not so environmentally friendly when it comes to both making and disposing of them. However, some maintain that they are more hygienic, as there is less handling of waste.
